The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is fundamental to everyone’s overall health and
wellbeing, with its importance often underestimated. However, decades of
research has consistently found that sleep is important, and should be
recognized in importance as nutrition and exercise.

Sleep impacts every aspect of a person’s life. This includes:

Physical Health:

  1. growth hormone is released
during sleep which aids in the growth and repair of cells. This can be
important in repairing damaged muscles and tissues.
  2. sleep is important to a person’s
immunity system, as poor sleep can impair immunity increasing the body’s
    susceptibility to infections.
  3. sleep can impact hormone balance –
the feeling of hunger and full. Poor sleep can impact this balance and
can lead to increased appetite and weight gain.
  4. poor sleep has been linked to a higher risk of diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity.

Brain Health:

  1. Good sleep solidifies and
consolidates memory. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep in particular is
    important for long term memory.
  2. inadequate sleep has been found to impair alertness, concentration, attention and learning ability.
  3. sleep can impact a person’s mood. Good
sleep has been found to support better mood and emotional regulation,
whereas poor sleep can increase the risk of irritability and even
    depression.
